FAQs WSA

Assalamualaikum and Hello Bruwinchies!

Winchester School of Art is set in pleasant, green surroundings close to the city centre.  The City of Winchester has a lively atmosphere, with many pubs, restaurants and cafes. There are also many cultural attractions, including museums, a cinema and art galleries. Sporting facilities include River Park Leisure Centre, which offers subsidised membership for our students.

The city has excellent road and rail links, offering easy access to the south's many attractions. The campus is a 10-minute walk from Winchester train station which provides a regular service to nearby Southampton and London, which is less than an hour's journey away. Southampton's busy international airport offers quick, reasonably priced flights to Europe.

The city of Southampton is only 12 miles from Winchester and offers extensive sporting facilities, restaurants, nightclubs, the region's largest theatre and one of the UK's top retail outlets, West Quay. Our students can easily access Southampton's nightlife and social events by catching theNightstar bus service, which runs between the two cities on Friday and Saturday nights until 3.30am. Getting to Winchester by yourself

By coach/bus

National Express Coaches run almost 24 hours a day between London Heathrow Airport and Winchester City Centre, average a coach each hour.

For timetable and bus station address, please visit http://www.nationalexpress.com/

Please "click here for more locations" and enter from "Heathrow Airport" to "Winchester". Select the date you are going to travel and change the journey type to "one-way".

Click on "Times & Fares", choose the precise "from" and "to" stations. The King Alfred Status coach stop is about 10 minutes away from Erasmus Park by walk.

Click on "continue", select the best time for your travel and give information about "who is travelling". Please note in the table, under changes you may find 0 or 1. Choose the one with 0 if possible, so you do not need to get off in the middle and wait for another coach. Besides, journeys with 1 change take much longer.

Click on "continue" and you will find the fare available. It costs normally 12.60 GBP to travel one-way from Heathrow to Winchester.

National Express is also a good and cheap way of getting to London and many other places after you settle down.

By Train and Underground

After you arrive at the London Heathrow Airport Arrival Hall, first you need to look for the ticketing office by following the Underground Sign (link to a sign).
-Buy a ticket to "London Waterloo station" which normally costs 4.30GBP.
-Follow sign "Piccadilly Line" in dark blue over your head to the tram and get off at "Leicester Square" stop.
-Follow "way out" until you see "Northern Line". Go to "Northern Line" south bound or make sure you can see "Waterloo" in the list at the tram stop.
-Get off at "Waterloo" stop, follow "way out" and look for the train sign (link to a train sign)
-You will arrive at a busy hall with screens in a row hanging in the air giving travel information. Go to the ticketing office and buy a ticket to "Winchester". During off-peak time (any time except 7-9.30am Monday-Friday), it normally costs 26 GBP for a one-way journey to Winchester.
-Look for "Winchester" on the screens and find out the station number and departure time. The fewer stops before Winchester, the faster the train is normally.
-Go to the station, get on the train and relax. Avoid "First Class" if you are not holding a right ticket.
-During the journey, your may be asked to show your ticket to the ticketing officer. Keep your ticket around.
-Get off at "Winchester" station. It is about 15-20 minutes away from Erasmus Park. Taxies are also available outside the train station.

By Taxi

If you prefer a taxi to pick you up right from the Arrival Hall, you need to book one at least 24 hours in advance. The company we normally recommend is English Rose Collection, Tel 0044 (0)1329 668822, email mail@englishrosecollection.co.uk

You need to tell them your flight number, arrival date and estimated arrival time, your name, your destination, and which terminal you are arriving at. Please ask them to hold a piece of paper or board with your name on in order for you to find the right person.

If you are travelling to the UK for the first time, you may be asked to do a medical check which takes some time. So normally ask the driver to be at the Arrival Hall about one hour after your flight lands to avoid extra cost on the parking.
